ASIC Updates Register Extracts to Redact Director Address Information
On , the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) announced chnages to the publication of Company Extracts from its registers.
In its media statement, ASIC cited the reasons for the change as increased protections for individual directors' privacy, alongside personal security concerns.
What are the changes?
Directors and other officeholders are required under the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth) to provide ASIC with their current residential address, and to notify ASIC of any change to that address within 28 days.
Until now, ASIC has made all registered addresses available to the public when a Company Extract or Searchable Document is purchased, subject to limited exceptions.
The changes will mean the redaction of Directors' residential addresses from ASIC-published Company Extracts. ASIC is reportedly working with commercial extract providers and data brokers to rollout the changes across all platforms.

However, the change does not necessarily mean that residential address information will no longer be available. Currently, the redaction policy applies only to Company Extract data. It does not apply to:
- Searchable documents lodged with ASIC which may contain a Director's address - such as a required lodgement to update or appoint a Director.
- Other data fields where an address is present - such as a Company's Registered Office Address, Principal Place of Business Address, or Address for ASIC Correspondence.
In addition, ASIC may still provide director address information to certain parties for approved purposes - such as government agencies, courts, lawyers and insolvency practitioners.
ASIC stated:
This action does not remove residential address information entirely but introduces a barrier at the most widely available access point.
Law enforcement agencies, government departments, and those who require address details for regulatory compliance and business purposes will still have access to this information.
Other methods of address suppression
Directors who are concerned about publication of their residential address may apply to ASIC for address suppression in some circumstances - such as where the Director is already enrolled as a Silent Elector on the Electoral Roll, administered by the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC).
Possible future changes
At the time of writing, further legislative changes are proposed which, if passed, include additional information in ASIC registers.
The proposed changes include:
- linking the existing Director ID Number (DIN) database with the Companies Register
- the ability to nominate an alternate address, including an email address, for ASIC Correspondence.
Consultation on the draft legislation ends on .
